Frequently Asked Questions

What is women’s health?

Women’s health encompasses a specialized area of medicine focused on the treatment and care of conditions and diseases that affect a woman’s physical or emotional well-being. This includes a wide range of services like routine preventive and gynecological care, pelvic and obstetric ultrasound, pregnancy care and childbirth, STI treatment, UTI testing, and conditions like fibroids, endometriosis, and PCOS. We also offer procedures like colposcopies, LEEPs, and the insertion or removal of IUDs and Nexplanon, ensuring comprehensive care across all stages of a woman’s life.

How do I prepare for my women’s health appointment?

Preparing for an appointment involves gathering any relevant medical records and history, including details of your menstrual cycle, any previous diagnoses or treatments, and a list of current medications. It’s also helpful to note any symptoms or concerns you wish to discuss with your provider. Depending on the type of appointment, you may be advised to avoid certain activities for a period before your visit. Bringing insurance information and a form of identification is also important, and considering any questions or goals you have for the appointment can help maximize its benefit.

Why are women’s health visits performed?

Women’s health procedures are performed to diagnose, treat, and manage a wide range of health issues specific to the female reproductive system, as well as broader health concerns. These include screening for and treating sexually transmitted infections, managing pregnancy and childbirth, diagnosing and treating conditions like fibroids, endometriosis, and PCOS, and preventing diseases through routine exams and vaccinations. Procedures like colposcopies and LEEPs are crucial for diagnosing and treating cervical abnormalities, while contraceptive device insertion and removal cater to family planning needs.

What can I expect during my women’s health visit?

During your visit, the specific expectations will vary based on the type of procedure being performed. Generally, you can expect a discussion with your healthcare provider about the procedure, its purpose, and any necessary preparations. For diagnostic procedures like ultrasounds or colposcopies, there may be some physical discomfort but they are usually quick. Surgical procedures like LEEPs or device insertions may require local anesthesia. The healthcare team will ensure your privacy and comfort throughout the procedure, providing instructions and support.

What is the followup and recovery like for women’s health visits?

Follow-up and recovery for a women’s health procedure depend on the nature and complexity of the procedure. For non-invasive or minor procedures, recovery might involve minimal downtime, with instructions on any signs of complications to observe. More invasive procedures may require a period of rest, medication to manage pain or prevent infection, and possibly restrictions on certain activities. Follow-up appointments are often scheduled to check on the healing process, discuss results, and ensure the effectiveness of treatments.

What are the potential costs for a women’s health visit?

The potential costs for a women’s health visit can vary widely based on the type of procedure and whether you have health insurance. Diagnostic procedures like ultrasounds or lab tests may have lower costs compared to surgical procedures like LEEPs or device insertions. Many insurance plans cover women’s health services, but out-of-pocket expenses can include deductibles, copays, or coinsurance. We offer payment plans for those without insurance or with high out-of-pocket costs.

What are the potential risks for a women’s health procedure?

Potential risks for these procedures can include infection, bleeding, or adverse reactions to anesthesia for surgical procedures. Diagnostic procedures generally have lower risks but may cause discomfort or anxiety. Each procedure’s specific risks will be discussed by your provider beforehand, and measures are taken to minimize these risks. It’s important for patients to follow pre-procedure and post-procedure instructions closely to reduce the risk of complications.

Are there related procedures to women’s health services?

Related procedures encompass a broad spectrum of medical care aimed at addressing women’s health issues. This includes mammography for breast cancer screening, bone density testing for osteoporosis, genetic counseling for hereditary cancer risks, and fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF). Wellness and preventive care, such as nutritional counseling and mental health services, are also integral to comprehensive women’s health care, addressing the full range of physical, emotional, and social aspects of well-being.
